Looking For FilmMakers
When folks hear the term African American film maker, what comes to their mind is
often different. A great deal of people can only think of Spike
Lee. Others think of John Singleton. But the history of Black films goes back as far as film
history itself. The first independent films were called race films, not because they were racist, but because they were made for ethnic audiences.
Since Hollywood didn't see this as a major market it took independent Black film producers, actors and writers to create everything from crime films,
musicals and even westerns to meet the need. Things have come a long way. "African American FilmMakers,"
a nationally televised showcase of short films that star, are produced by, are written and/or directed by African-American filmmakers, is accepting
submissions for it's 2005 season. "African American FilmMakers" airs quarterly in over
100 cities
nationwide. "American Short Films,"
