MOVIE & TV NEWS

The Sarah Jane Adventures
Production has begun on "The Sarah Jane Adventures," featuring Elisabeth Sladen. The Doctor Who spinoff about investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith (companion to the third and fourth Doctors in the 1970s) was the subject of an interview conducted by  SCI FI Wire with executive producer Russell T. Davies, who said: "It's a one-off special, not a pilot. And that will be followed by a series that starts filming in April. Right now, we have to balance Doctor Who and [spinoff series] Torchwood, but the most important thing we always have to remember is that Doctor Who is the mother ship. Without that, we would't exist, so we plan everything very carefully. [We're] getting our team ready to make a one-hour Sarah Jane. After that, we'll start working on the scripts, and by next April we'll be ready for the series, so it's all dovetailed nicely." Word is that Sladen's Smith will appear with Yasmine Paige, who will play Smith's 13-year-old niece, Maria, and the two team up to battle alien forces they encounter around Britain, including the scheming Ms. Wormwood (played by Samantha Bond), who will appear in the one-hour special. Sadly Smith's loyal robot dog, K-9, who will play a role in the special, won't be part of the series. "Sadly, we don't own the rights to K-9," Davies says, "[Writer] Bob Baker granted us the rights for 'School Reunion,' but he's been planning his own spinoff series for K-9 for the past 10-15 years. That series is in development right now with Jetix, so I hope it happens, and good luck to him." "Doctor Who" begins its third season in the United Kingdom on BBC1 early next year, while the second season starts in the U. S. on SCI FI Channel on Sept. 29 and will air Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The "School Reunion" episode (that will re-introduce Sarah Jane) will air on SCI FI on Oct. 11.

Predator 3
IESB, hasl printed a report from one of their sources that there may be an upcoming solo Predator film coming. The source said: "Predator 3 (won't be called that), would be a brand new chapter in the series. All those rumors about it starring The Rock or John Cena as Schwarzenegger's character, Dutch, aren't true. One bit of a interesting talk is that Sylvester Stallone might be being coaxed to do battle with the new 'Predator.'" Also mentioned was that the script for "AVP 2: Survival of the Fittest" will be closer to "Aliens" than the original "Alien vs. Predator."

ReelzChannel
A new channel that launched yesterday exists to talk about movies. ReelzChannel's cornerstone is "Dailies," hosted by Mike Richards, described as "designed as the go-to show for news and information about movies." Leonard Maltin will host "The Secret's Out" about overlooked praiseworthy movies being carried on cable and satellite outlets. Yet another show, "The Big Tease," will show trailers for upcoming movies.

O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce
Rosario Dawson's co-created and co-written Image Comics series "O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce" has been picked up by Dimension Films. Dawson will also star and produce the story of the New York police detective who, after stumbling upon a gruesome and bizarre crime scene, is enlisted for a covert squad that uses black arts and mystical weaponry to hunt down and kill soul-sucking ghouls.

P.S., I Love You
James Marsters will join Hilary Swank in the cast of the romantic drama "P.S., I Love You." Based on the book by Cecelia Ahern, the Warner Brothers film will tell of a grieving young widow (Swank) who discovers her late husband has left her a list of tasks revealed in 10 monthly messages that are intended to ease her out of grief and transition her to a new life. Marsters will play the late husband's best friend. Gerard Butler and Lisa Kudrow also star, while Richard LaGravenese directs from his own screenplay. Shooting begins in mid-October in New York and Ireland.

Mary Queen of Scots
Scarlett Johansson will follow up her historical piece "The Other Boleyn Girl," (which is filming now) with "Mary Queen of Scots." The actress will play Queen Mary of Scotland in the film showing the antagonistic relationship between Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I of England. No director has yet been named, but Melanie Johansson (the actress' mother and manager) will produce. Production starts by the end of summer 2007.
