Medium
Animation
Creator
of NBC's hit series Medium, Glenn
Gordon Caron spoke to SCI
FI Wire about the upcoming two-hour third-season premiere. He said:
"When I was doing Moonlighting,
I would keep this little list of things I wanted to do. A lot of them I
didn't get done, by the way. I remember one time saying, on the list, Bruce
Willis should strike a match on the edge of the screen and light a
cigarette. Stupid little visual things. And, I thought to myself, and I
actually said it, I think, to [NBC Entertainment president] Kevin Reilly
a year ago, [I] said we should do something involving animation. Because
part of . . . the trick of our show is, . . . we try and present
this woman who leads a fairly modest life who has this extraordinary gift.
It's in the extraordinary gift that we get to do sort of phantasmagoric
things visually." In the premiere,
"Four Dreams,"
animation by Johnny Bravo
creator Van Partible
represents the dreams of Bridgette (Maria
Lark), daughter of psychic Allison
Dubois (Patricia
Arquette). Traditional 2-D hand-drawn animation, those cartoon
dreams start out as light comedic bits, but gradually turn darker as they
present Bridgette's premonitions of death. Caron continued: "The
more I talked about [animation], the more I was convinced there was a show
in it. The cartoon thing was to me also,
. . . I thought, frankly, . . . so much of what we deal in is death.
And when I met [the real] Allison Dubois, the thing that struck me and
touched me so deeply when she sits down and tells you her stories, you
think, 'My, God, this woman has Radio Death going on in her head all the
time.' She sees ghosts, and most of the ghosts that come to her don't come
to her because they've had a good life and a sweet death. They come to
her because something awful and violent has happened. She sees a very,
very dark vision of the world. . . . You're always looking for other
ways to . . . communicate this. How do I keep it fresh, and, frankly, how
do I shock you? Because part of it is I have to shock you in order to impress
you with just how awful things are, and you realize at a certain point
you can do that with a cartoon, and in some ways, it's more unsettling.
You can get away with things in a cartoon, because cartoons are inherently
violent." "Medium" returns on NBC at 9
p.m. ET/PT on Nov. 15 then goes back to its regular Wednesday 10 p.m. timeslot
the next week.
The
Dresden Files
Production
has begun in Toronto on the SCI FI Channel's
"The Dresden Files."
The series, based on Jim
Butcher's novel series, will be a 12 episode show starring
Paul
Blackthorne as Harry Dresden, a Chicago-based private wizard. Terrence
Mann has joined the cast as Dresden's trusted confidant, Bob. "The
Dresden Files" also stars Valerie
Cruz as police Lt. Murphy and Conrad
Coats as Morgan. I don't know any of the cast or production folks,
but Butcher is a good man a deserves a hit. Give the show a watch when
it debuts in January 2007, okay?
Iron
Man DTV

Bryan
Singer News
Cinescope
(under its new name Mania)
says "According to Superman executive producer
Chris
Lee, the sequel to Superman
Returns will likely fly it's way into theaters in 2009. I am
assuming the date would be set somewhere in the Summer of '09, with June
being the most likely home. The film is expected to start production
mid to late 2007. In other Superman news, IESB.com
reported that the sequel's working title has been set as Superman: The
Man of Steel. In ever MORE Superman (and Marvel) related news, director
Bryan Singer told the newspaper that he has also been offered the fourth
X-Men movie, but said he wouldn't have time to take on another large-scale
project before the next Superman gets underway. He added that he is interested,
however, in seeing the script for the proposed X-Men spinoff, Wolverine."
IESB reports that the "Superman Returns"
sequel now has a working title - "Superman:
The Man of Steel." Warners said 'no comment' on the article, then,
later, said that the title "may not be
accurate."
The
Hollywood Reporter says that Chris
Palmer has replaced Tim
McCanlies as the director on the Warner
Bros Pictures' "A Spell for Chameleon."
Based on the first of Piers
Anthony's Xanth novel series, the film has Warners hoping for a Harry
Potter type franchise. In the kingdom of Xanth everyone has magical powers
except for one young man, exiled for having none. He later finds his true
gift and returns to save the kingdom. Palmer said: "The
'Harry Potter' books are about magic people and Muggles, humans who have
no powers and, ironically, the people reading them are Muggles themselves.
So I like this idea of turning that around. I like how (the main character's)
lack of magical abilities ends up saving the day."
Six
Becomes Them!
Variety
is reporting that Fox
will present "Them,"
an hourlong alien-themed project from Jonathan
Mostow and writers David
Eick and John McNamara.
Based on the graphic novel "Six,"
written by Michael Oeming and Daniel Berman the story involves a sleeper
cell of extraterrestrial terrorists who take the shape of humans. They
start having problems when they find themselves experiencing human emotions,
which is like a drug to them. Mostow said: "On
a surface level, it's a really cool science fiction thriller. But underneath,
it's a very provocative show that's really going to explore what it means
to be human, to be a person. The scariest thing about terror cells is how
decentralized they are -- so their moves are almost impossible to anticipate."
