C Wayne Owens' Movie & TV News is a daily newsletter featuring news gathered from all over the net with the newest and hottest movie and tv scoops. It is heavily weighted towards SF and Fantasy film, but if it's news (and not just Celeb gossip) it will be here, and be here weeks before the TV News shows even touch on it.

MOVIE & TV NEWS

The Thing Remake
Variety reports that Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures are planning to remake John Carpenter's "The Thing." Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, while David Foster will executive produce the script by Ronald D. Moore. No director has been named. Barely mentioned in the article is the fact that the Carpenter film was, in itself, a remake of "The Thing from Another World" both of which were based John W. Campbell Jr. 1938 short story "Who Goes There?" The Carpenter film returned to the orginal story to tell of a shape-shifting creature who terrorizes researchers at an Arctic facility.   The filmmakers say they "consider the new film to be more 'a companion piece' to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake."

Camp Creepy Time
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that DreamWorks and Nick Movies are in talks to pick up "Camp Creepy Time," by Gina Gershon and her brother DannGershon. The story tells of a 13-year-old boy who must rescue his fellow campers when he finds out that aliens make up the entire camp staff.

Weinstein/Blockbuster Deal
The Weinstein Company has announced a four-year deal with Blockbuster to give the rental company exclusive rights to their theatrical and direct-to-video movies. The two companies indicated that they will share in the rental revenue. In a statement, Bob and Harvey Weinstein say: "The unique combination of Blockbuster's established in-store retail experience with the power of their online subscription service was one of the biggest factors that attracted us to this alliance."

X-Men 4?
Coming Soon reports that Shawn Ashmore said at a press conference: "I know they are doing a Wolverine prequel and I've heard a rumor about a Magneto film . . .  those are all in the past like prequels and origin stories, so I don't know. There are rumors about an 'X-Men 4,' but as far as I've been told 'X3' was going to be the last big ensemble 'X-Men' movie. I would love if they made another one, but I'm not sure that they will. I have a contract if they make another one, then I have one more film." And about rumors of a an X-Men spin-off (or sequel) based on the younger mutants, he asid: "It could be real. It could have been leaked from somewhere, but officially from the people who are actually making the movies, I haven't heard anything like that."

First Season Sale
We try not to be a shill for Amazon, but they are having a holiday DVD sale that is worth mentioning. It is located over here  and has $15.98 prices for first season collections like "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate: Atlantis," "Mister Ed," "Dead Like Me," "The Magnificent 7," "Jeremiah," "Fame" and the complete revival series of "Dark Shadows." There are other titles, it is worth a look. Here they have $29.99 sets of seasons 1-3 of "Nip/Tuck" and seasons 1 & 2 of "Veronica Mars."

Production begins in early 2007 for Rogue Pictures' "Doomsday" starring Rhona Mitra. Neil Marshall will write and direct the story set three decades after a lethal virus tore through a major country, leading to the country's walling off. The virus, known as "the Reaper," then resurfaces in a different country, an elite group, lead by Mitra's character, is dispatched to find a cure. They are then shut off from the rest of the world and must battle a world that has become a waking nightmare.

Warren's Catalog
A drama inspired by the life of Diane Warren, who wrote songs for a wide range of musicians from Aerosmith to Celine Dion, is in development Lifetime Television. The untitled one-hour project related the story of a fictional songwriter in the midst of trying to start her career and dealing with a large, overbearing and dysfunctional family. The project was originally developed for ABC. It will feature music from Warren's catalog, including hits as well as new tunes that she will write for the series. Warren will be an executive consultant.
