SCI
FI Wire reports that Nicolas
Cage says fans of Philip
K. Dick will love "Next,"
based on the short story "The Golden Man."
He is quoted as saying: "If you're looking
for the Philip K. Dick mindf--k, you will get it. [It's] based on a Philip
K. Dick short story about a man who has the prescient ability to see two
minutes within his own future. He keeps seeing this girl played by Jessica
Biel, and he doesn't know why he keeps seeing her. He's got to find
out, and when he does, he realizes he can actually see further ahead when
she's there . . . . It's romantic, too. And Jessica Biel is great in it."
Directed by Lee Tamahori
and also starring Julianne
Moore, "Next"
will hit the theatres in September 2007.
Cartoon
Comeback
It
shows my generation when I tell you that I remember not only cartoons as
part of the movie bill, but shorts, newsreels and, yes, serials. Now all
of that has, bit by bit, been drained of all of that extra value. Now,
news comes down that the Walt
Disney Co. under push from Pixar's
John
Lasseter.
The New York Times
quotes Disney producer Don
Hahn as saying: "Shorts have always
been a wellspring of techniques, ideas and young talent. It's exactly what
Walt did, because it's a new studio now, with new talent coming up - -
as it should. I think the shorts program can really grow this studio. You
pay your 10 bucks to see a movie and you get a surprise you hadn't counted
on." New cartoons are scheduled
to play before Disney films. With any luck, other studios will feel compelled
to join in the chase. What's next? With the success of "24"
(which is nothing if not an update of the serial form) we could see serials
back at the show.
Palestine:
Peace Not Apartheid
Jonathan
Demme is in the process of shooting a documentary following president
Jimmy
Carter on a book tour to promote "Palestine:
Peace Not Apartheid." The book forwards
the idea that peace in the Middle East can be attained. Carter is using
the national tour to generate discussion all of which will be captured
on camera.
