"The Norliss Tapes" Movie Review"

76. The Norliss Tapes

When  Dan Curtis was riding
the big wave of the 1970's

this was one of the good ones
that slipped under most radars.

Curtis had given us "Dark Shadows " and
"Kolchak: The Night Stalker ."

He was searching around
for another possible series and

came across this story that piqued his interest.
Roy Thinnes   playing
an investigative reporter didn't sound

that different from Kolchak,
but then came the twist.

He never appeared in the present day of the show.
Norliss had disappeared and
left a desk full of audio tapes

full of his research.
As his publisher tried to figure out

where his ace had gone off to, we are drawn into
the very Lovecraftian world of the tapes.

The researcher was involved with other worldly evil
 and stood between that infestation
and the unsuspecting watchers.
This was the pilot movie
(much like the two "Kolchak" movies)
that was hoped would lead to another series.
The show featured many
of the Curtis stable of staples.

Folks like Claude Akins   joined  Angie Dickenson
and  Don Porter   in a flawless ensemble
to bolster Thinnes,

already well known in the field as the lead
in the ground-breaking series " The Invaders ."

People still say that this one,
shown late at night in reruns,

spooks them. It hasn't been released,
to my knowledge, on VHS or DVD.
So you will have to watch the listings to catch it.
But, if you do you will be glad you did.
Then you will wonder,
what was on all those other tapes?
And just where is David Norliss?
