SERENDIPITY CINEMA"Movie Movie" Movie Review
This is a one of a kind movie, or perhaps two. It is really two films, bound together by the era in which they are set. Set in the 1930's they are a pair of parodies.
One has fun with the whole format of the classic "Boxing" films, the second one takes on the musical.
You will see every cliché’ of the genre, and never have seen it delivered with more zest, or by anyone having more fun. George C. Scott takes the lead in both films. This first one touches on the monumental turf of films like "Body & Soul" and "The Champ" on its way to having a rollicking time with the whole idea.
The other film is a tribute to Busby Berkley and the movie musical of the 1930's, before they put together real "formula" for the whole thing. (Of course we figure out quickly that this is the formula)
Here is the cast: George C. Scott .... Gloves Malloy/Spats Baxter Trish Van Devere .... Betsy McGuire/Isobel Stuart Red Buttons .... Peanuts/Jinks Murphy Eli Wallach .... Vince Marlow/Pop Harry Hamlin .... Joey Popchik Ann Reinking .... Troubles Moran Jocelyn Brando .... Mama Popchik/Mrs. Updike Michael Kidd .... Pop Popchik Kathleen Beller .... Angie Popchik Barry Bostwick .... Johnny Danko/Dick Cummings Art Carney .... Doctor Blaine/Doctor Bowers
The word was that Scott would only do the Johnny Carson Tonight Show if he could do a sketch, since he loved to "hoke" it up. He gets just such a fest here, and if you are a movie nut, this one will be a joy to you. (BTW It is silly, I hope you don't mind silly) ![]() If you have an idea for a Serendipity Cinema, or want to comment email here --posted by Wayne
