Some shooting was recently done at MIT in Boston EchoStar Says Time Running Out For Some Turner Networks EchoStar Communications Corp. and Time Warner face a showdown that could result in EchoStar's Dish Network dropping some programming. It would include such Time Warner cable networks as CNN and Cartoon Network, the Miami Herald reports. The carriage agreement between the two companies is nearing the end of an extension. If the two sides cannot reach an agreement, Dish Network might have to drop the Turner networks, just as it was forced to drop Viacom's networks in a similar dispute earlier this year. ![]() Henshin! Online is reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment has picked up the North American rights to many classic Godzilla films from Toho Studios, and plans to release them on DVD later this year through Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. What a way to celebrate the Big Lizard's 50th anniversary. Titles would include Ebirah, Horror Of The Deep (a.k.a. Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster), Son Of Godzilla, Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (a.k.a. Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster) plus the original 1974 Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla (a.k.a. Godzilla Vs. The Cosmic Monster). These films are not currently available on U.S. disc, and the VHS editions have been out of print for some time. In addition, Sony is creating new English-subtitled prints of a number of other Toho titles for screening at U.S. repertory houses and festivals, including the Godzilla 50th Anniversary Tribute being held by the American Cinematheque in June. That event will show prints of Ebirah and the original Mothra, and other movies in this lineup are The H-Man, Battle In Outer Space, Son Of Godzilla and, most excitingly, the '90s monster mashes Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla Vs. Mothra, 1993's Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla, Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla and Godzilla Vs.. Destorah. It is not known whether any of the latter titles, which have previously been released by Columbia TriStar U.S. DVD in dubbed versions only, will be reissued on disc with the Japanese soundtracks.
Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of "Manderlay," the second film in Lars von Trier's "USA -- Land of Opportunities" trilogy. Dafoe is to play the father of Grace, the central character played by Nicole Kidman in the series' first film, "Dogville," and played by Bryce Dallas Howard in "Manderlay." Dafoe will join Lauren Bacall, Jean-Marc Barr, Jeremy Davies, Isaach De Bankole, Danny Glover, Udo Kier, John C. Reilly and Chloe Sevigny in the new installment, which is set in the American South during the 1930s and racism. Like "Dogville," "Manderlay" is to be be shot entirely on a stage. This was inspired in part by von Trier's childhood viewings of theater productions broadcast on live television and also reflects the influence of Bertolt Brecht. It is also a calculated move away from the modern-day domination of computers in the creation of film. Lohman And Nelson Put Up The White Flag Alison Lohman and Tim Blake Nelson are now part of the cast of "The Big White," an extremely dark comedy to star Robin Williams. The cast already includes Holly Hunter, Giovanni Ribisi and James Woods. Filming of the indie feature is set to begin Monday in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the Yukon. The director is Mark Mylod. Williams plays an Alaskan travel agent living with a deranged wife (Hunter). He finds a frozen body in his garbage bin and pretends that he has found his long lost brother. The character see this as the end to his finacial problems. Lohman is to play the girlfriend of the insurance agent (Ribisi) investigating the case, while Nelson will play a low-level gangster just trying to recover the dead body. ![]()
Men Don't Get Lucky Charmed Rose McGowan was at the "Fashion Don't" party recently and gave a couple of hints as to what's coming up for "Charmed." McGowan and her Charmed sisters, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs, she told, will become Stepford Wives in their tragic season finale, which will see one of their male cast members die. Charming. Bogdanovich Bets On Pete Rose Peter Bogdanovich, praised by critics for such films as The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon, but recently reviled in for such flops as At Long Last Love, Illegally Yours and the recent low-rated ABC-TV flick The Mystery of Natalie Wood, has signed on to direct Hustle: The Pete Rose Story for ESPN. The Time Warner-owned sports cable network plans to air the movie on Sept. 25. It will be shot in Toronto next month. Those "G*SH D*RNED" Dirty DVD's! Clearplay, the Salt Lake City, UT company that enflamed Hollywood when it began slash scenes of sex, violence and swearing from its customers' home videos, now has a new weapon ally; a $79 DVD player, manufactured by RCA and available in Wal-Mart stores. It has been programmed to skip over or mute possibly objectionable scenes in over 500 movies. Although producers of the movies had previously maintained that Clearplay would be violating their copyrights by bowdlerizing their movies, this new player does not alter the product at all. Clearplay claims that the new technology simply allows viewers a better way to play movies they already own and is no different from a fast-forward button. ![]() Berry's Claws Unsheathed! Finally, just because people keep asking, here's a picture from the Catwoman movie with Halle Berry (above's how she looked on the animated show (a little different audience, don'tcha think?)
Question #819: This first episode of a classic series of pulp novels began thus: "THERE was death afoot in the darkness. It crept furtively along a steel girder. Hundreds of feet below yawned glass-and-brick-walled cracks - New York streets. Down there, late workers scurried homeward. Most of them carried umbrellas, and did not glance upward. Even had they looked, they probably would have noticed nothing. The night was black as a cave bat. Rain threshed down monotonously The clammy sky was like an oppressive shroud wrapped around the tops of the tall buildings. One skyscraper was under construction. It had been completed to the eightieth floor. Some offices were in use. Above the eightieth floor, an ornamental observation tower jutted up a full hundred and fifty feet more. The metal work of this was in place, but no masonry had been laid. Girders lifted a gigantic steel skeleton. The naked beams were a sinister forest. It was in this forest that Death prowled. Death was a man." Who was the star of this hugely successful series? Answer
#818:
