MOVIE & TV NEWS
Wandering Skeletons of the Sahara Internet Movie Site To Go on the Radio Movies.com, Disney's movie listings and gossip website, has announced a deal with its corporate sibling ABC Radio to provide several minute-long entertainment-related news features to ABC radio affiliates. Theses will include a Monday box office report from ABC Radio's chief entertainment correspondent Bill Diehl, plus "Cinemafiles," described cryptically as "a clever, topical compendium of must-see DVDs inspired by current events." Originally a joint venture between Disney and 20th Century Fox for "on demand" movie distribution via broadband connections to the Internet, Movies.com dropped the effort two years ago after Fox withdrew from the partnership. Can't Get Work? Create The Work! The Hollywood Reporter reports that three struggling 24-year-old actress-writers who live together in Los Angeles have become the stuff of urban legends. They sold a comedy script about how their lives "suck." Alyssa Embree, Stacy Hartman and Jessica Koosed, who only a week ago were eating "ramen noodle soup and canned tuna" the sold "Kiss & Tell" to Disney-owned production banner Touchstone TV and "Bruce Almighty" director Tom Shadyac's studio-based Shady Acres for a tidey sum. "We thought that there is nothing on TV that we could relate to because we felt like everything glamorized your 20s and made everything look so easy, which is a myth," Embree told the paper. "We're like, your early 20s suck, and nobody told us that, nobody gave us a road book, and nobody shows that on TV." The autobiographical "Kiss & Tell" is about three women in their early 20s who struggle jsut to make ends meet in Los Angeles. "It's kind of a young 'Sex and the City,' but these girls are broke. They don't go to trendy cafes and wear Manolo Blahniks; they go to happy hour for 2-for-1 drinks and free snacks," Embree laughed. "The basis is their friendship, but it really tries to dispel the rumor that your early 20s are so easy and nostalgic. They're hard, and these girls do it with self-deprecating humor." The trio met in their first year at USC's School of Theater and have been friends ever since, are going to serve as supervising producers. There have been announcements as to whether they might also star. Now that would be a Hollywood story. ![]()
Paul McCartney's Long And Winding Road To Animation On the eve of releasing a DVD that features his music and hand-drawn animation that he designed, Paul McCartney has announced plans to produce a full-length feature film that will also employ traditional animation. In an interview with Reuters, McCartney said "I remember saying to the guys in the Beatles, 'I'd love to do it some day, ' and them saying to me, 'Then do it.'" Although most film studios, including Disney, are tossing out the idea of hand-drawn cell drawings in favor of computer-generated images, McCartney said that he prefers the "old fashioned" way. "Everybody's into CGI," he tole Reuters. "I don't love that as much as the old Disneys," which, he asserted, exemplify "a more artistic look, a soft look, a warmer look" than those "shiny, squeaky clean look" produced by computers. Sue Storm About To Be Seen? The Fantastic Four movie at 20th Century Fox many times delayed and often mistaken for dead will go before cameras sometime this year. So, of course the rumors about possible casting considerations have started to be heard. Last week the reports leaned towards Michael Chiklis (The Shield) and Tim Robbins (Mystic River). Now a The rumor, heard on the set of Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty is that actress Christina Milian is one of the ladies being considered for the part of Susan Storm, The Invisible Woman. They Were Taken, Now They're Back USA Network has puchased the science fiction series The 4400 for broadcast on Sci Fi. The network is to air the first episode sometime this summer. The series was developed by Maira Suro and Rene Echevarria (Deep Space Nine), The 4400 tells the story of 4,400 people who are returned to Earth after their abduction by aliens. They have no memory of what happened during their time off-planet, and they do not appear to have aged at all -- even though some have been missing for decades. Peter Coyote (Sphere), Michael Moriarty (Law & Order), Laura Allen, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Jacqueline McKenzie and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali are to star. ABC Spares Some Shows ABC, has given full-season pickups to seven series, including freshman comedy "Hope & Faith" and reality siblings "Extreme Makeover" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." The struggling network announced the early pickups for the 2004-05 season in part to allow each of the shows to firm up their production teams, said to ABC Entertainment president Susan Lyne. "It's always good to go into May with everyone optimistic and knowing that the shows are coming back," she said. "Hope & Faith" has been ABC's standout among the network's freshman class of series. "According to Jim," "My Wife and Kids" and "George Lopez," remain competitive, though ABC's Tuesday and Wednesday comedy shows have taken a hit since the return of Fox's "American Idol" this January. Sunday juggernaut "America's Funniest Home Videos" was the last of the list of pickups announced late Monday. ABC has already announced its renewal of veteran cop drama "NYPD Blue" for a 12th and final season. Lyne stressed Monday that there are yet a handful of other ABC shows that are will see full-season renewals in the coming weeks. "The Bachelor" is almost sure, and sources at the network say it's a safe bet that "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" will be back for a third season. ![]()
