Well, like so many things we've seen in genre creations (except those damned flying cars! Where are the flying cars?), the real world version has hit the street. Japanese manufacturer NHJ introduced their first all-in-one television wrist watch Wednesday, in Japan. The device features a 1.5-inch TFT screen and weighing about 1.9 ounces. 20 years ago, Seiko Corp produced a similar watch, but it had receiver portion that had to be worn on your belt. This new VTV-101 Wrist Watch TV calls for a retail price of $185. No plans have yet been announced for distribution other than in Japan. Alas, no further word on the flying cars. This Time The Cougar Scare Is Real For Cuthbert 24 star Elisha Cuthbert was savagely attacked by a cougar and was rushed to hospital while during filming of the hit TV series. Fans may recall the star had a pretty silly run-in with a cougar in last seasons most reviled episode. This time the real 100lb. animal sunk it's teeth into the actress through it's cage. She reported, "My stunt double was petting the animal, so I put my hand out to stroke it and it bit me, it almost ripped my thumb off. I was rushed to hospital with two puncture wounds, one of which went right through my hand, I had a brace on my hand for five weeks and now I'm left with a cool scar." Davis Goes From Holes To Guardian "Holes" director Andrew Davis now has another job from Disney, he will direct the drama "The Guardian." "I grew up loving the Star Wars movies and Raiders [of the Lost Ark] and these kinds of films," Conran said. "And [I] grew up with a lot of those old influences in the serials as well, and it was just incredible fun." Sky Captain began as an experiment: to see if he could really create an entire feature film with just himself and a computer. "What drew me to the serials in particular was when I actually sat down and did indeed intend to kind of do this by myself, I was a bit intimidated by the notion of ... actually creating a hundred minutes of footage for a film," Conran said. "I thought I could make five short films. So the notion of dividing this up in chapters and only having to kind of like take on maybe 12 minutes at a time ... seemed more doable. ... Each chapter would have been a victory unto itself." Without warning, Sky Captain was suddenly a big-budget Hollywood movie, featuring stars like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, all acting in front of a green screen. "They completely embraced this whole process and knew the limitations," Conran said. "They were generous and kind with me to a fault. I think they were sensitive to everything about this process and made it easy, and ... it wasn't incumbent upon me to kind of like pull performances out of them. They're just such terribly skilled people that I just got to sit back and marvel at them." Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow opens nationwide on June 25. ![]()
