Both Exorcist Prequels On DVD?
Paul Schraeder's original cut of "Exorcist: The Beginning?". Rumors are that a rough cut is out there and floating around, and the film that most probably thought would never see the light of day is being looked on as a hot property. Warners is planning to release the completely redone Renny Harlin-directed prequel this August. The ability to compare the two films would be a devilish treat but rarely possible as the original cut would usually be destroyed. At this moment that does not seem to be the case. Variety is reporting that Morgan Creek boss James Robinson has plans: Warner Bros., due to his prompting, may release both versions of the film at once, on DVD. "This is going to sound unbelievable," Robinson told the paper, "but we made a movie - twice. If you see the two movies, you wouldn't believe it's the same d.p. It's almost like a case study (in the difference a director can make".This might cause several problems, including how the Director's Guild would list accreditations for the title. No word yet on how Warners would handle the actual releases. Schrader likes the idea - "I'm very proud of my film, and I think it deserves to be seen. If I get the DVD, I can say 'God bless you Renny; may your film do well...The situation is in some ways the ultimate film school exercise, though you usually don't give each director $35 million to make their film".

Kelly Hu In Collinwood
The WB has cast Kelly Hu (X2) in its updated Dark Shadows , Variety reported. Hu is set for the part of Dr. Julia Hoffman, the doctor who discovers that Barnabas Collins is a vampire, and sets out to cure him. This newest attempt to remake of the classic '60s vampire soap opera will also star Martin Donovan, Matt Czuchry, Alexander Gould, Blair Brown, Marley Shelton, Ivana Milicevic, Alec Newman  and Jessica Chastain, the show biz paper reported.

Kill Bill Volume One Sells 2 Million Units On Its First Day
Miramax Home Entertainment's Kill Bill: Volume One made the retail market stand up and take notice as it sold two million units on DVD and video in North America on just its first day of availability. Business Wire has more of the story.

TV Wristwatch Makes Its Debut in Japan
Anyone out there old enough to remember the Dick Tracy wrist-radios, that later became wrist TVs? Well, like so many things we've seen in genre creations (except those damned flying cars! Where are the flying cars?), the real world version has hit the street. Japanese manufacturer NHJ introduced their first all-in-one television wrist watch Wednesday, in Japan. The device features a 1.5-inch TFT screen and weighing about 1.9 ounces. 20 years ago, Seiko Corp produced a similar watch, but it had receiver portion that had to be worn on your belt. This new VTV-101 Wrist Watch TV calls for a retail price of $185. No plans have yet been announced for distribution other than in Japan. Alas, no further word on the flying cars.

The Return of "The Chloe Chronicles"
America Online has new episodes of Chloe Chronicles, the short online video segments that fill in gaps in the plotlines of The WB's Smallville. New episodes will show up every Wednesday beginning tonight and will continue through May 26. Meanwhile, DC Comics' Smallville title is going to begin tying into the online series, offering more backstories to online segments. Chloe Chronicles is only available through the AOL for Broadband service at AOL Keyword: Chloe Chronicles.

The New House of Wax
Coming Soon reports that Jon Abrahams (Meet the Parents, Fox's Boston Public) is now in the cast of this remake.

Two DVD's For "Hellboy"

(One of the original Hellboy Graphic Novels)
Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro has announced his plans for two separate DVD versions of the movie. One would be a double-disc edition, in August, and what he calls a "fan" edition, which would contain a  20 minute longer cut. This version would be released in December. "The first edition is going to be a double disc hopefully, and the second edition is going to be a long cut of the movie, 20 minutes added, and you add a third disc to it," del Toro informed Video Store magazine. "I think you have the chance of the more casual fan just buying the first one, and the guy who really is hardcore going for the second one." One of the reasons for the longer cut will be for the development of the relationship between Agent Myers (Rupert Evans) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and the resulting jealousy of Hellboy (Ron Perlman). That subplot, said del Toro, "couldn't be in the movie because the theatrical cut has to be a cut that moves to a pace that any casual fan or nonfan can enjoy, [while] the DVD is [for] hardcore [fans]."

Troy Doesn't Fall Quickly
According to Dark Horizons the running time for the epic is up around two and three-quarter hours.

The Hire Will Be Comic From Dark Horse
Dark Horse Comics has announced a new comic book based on The Hire, a series of short films that several acclaimed directors created for automaker BMW. The films starred the likes of Clive Owen , who played a mysterious driver performing special jobs in BMW cars. Newsarama interviewed comic creator Matt Wagner, about his providing both story and artwork for the first issue.

This Time The Cougar Scare Is Real For Cuthbert
24 star Elisha Cuthbert was savagely attacked by a cougar and was rushed to hospital while during filming of the hit TV series. Fans may recall the star had a pretty silly run-in with a cougar in last seasons most reviled episode. This time the real 100lb. animal sunk it's teeth into the actress through it's cage. She reported, "My stunt double was petting the animal, so I put my hand out to stroke it and it bit me, it almost ripped my thumb off. I was rushed to hospital with two puncture wounds, one of which went right through my hand, I had a brace on my hand for five weeks and now I'm left with a cool scar."

Davis Goes From Holes To Guardian
"Holes" director Andrew Davis  now has another job from Disney, he will direct the drama "The Guardian." The film is about a rebellious young man whose life is totally out of control. He tries enlisting in the Coast Guard, and he forms friendship with a well known rescue swimmer. The legendary mentor lost his crew in a fatal crash. The older man helps the younger man turn around his life by teaching him the meaning and importance of sacrifice. No cast has been attached.

Sky Captain Hangs From Cliffs
Kerry Conran, the first time director of the upcoming live-action/computer-animated SF movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, said in an interview with SCI FI Wire that he set out to recreate the old film serials of the 1930s and their modern-day counterparts. "I grew up loving the Star Wars movies and Raiders [of the Lost Ark] and these kinds of films," Conran said. "And [I] grew up with a lot of those old influences in the serials as well, and it was just incredible fun." Sky Captain began as an experiment: to see if he could really create an entire feature film with just himself and a computer. "What drew me to the serials in particular was when I actually sat down and did indeed intend to kind of do this by myself, I was a bit intimidated by the notion of ... actually creating a hundred minutes of footage for a film," Conran said. "I thought I could make five short films. So the notion of dividing this up in chapters and only having to kind of like take on maybe 12 minutes at a time ... seemed more doable. ... Each chapter would have been a victory unto itself." Without warning, Sky Captain was suddenly a big-budget Hollywood movie, featuring stars like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, all acting in front of a green screen. "They completely embraced this whole process and knew the limitations," Conran said. "They were generous and kind with me to a fault. I think they were sensitive to everything about this process and made it easy, and ... it wasn't incumbent upon me to kind of like pull performances out of them. They're just such terribly skilled people that I just got to sit back and marvel at them." Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow opens nationwide on June 25.
