The Long Jump From Alien to Flash Gordon
IGN FilmForce was recently hinted that the long-in-development-hell big-screen return of Flash Gordon has been passed to a new screenwriter. According to our scooper, the scripter in question is Ronald Shusett (Total Recall).  Shusett has a story credit for the first Alien and a "based on characters created by" credit on all the subsequent Alien films, including the as yet unreleased Alien vs. Predator. He  has other screenwriting credits that include Minority Report and Freejack.

Keep Your Motor Running
Ewan McGregor will spend the next three months accomplishing a round-the-world motorcycle trip, with the trip to be edited for a TV documentary. He began in London this week with friend Charley (son of John) Boorman, with their route to take them into Europe, Siberia, then across the Bering Straight and into Alaska. Then the pair will continue on across the US to the Atlantic Ocean. The film is set to air sometime next year.

SEC Aims New Charges at Time Warner
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is preparing to allege that Time Warner, parent company of Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network, accounted more than $400 million in questionable revenue during and after its merger with America Online (AOL), the Washington Post reported. Although Time Warner has admitted that there were questionable accounting practices at AOL before the merger, these new charges refer to deals created by Time Warner after the merger and supported by its current management. The Post reports that the SEC may have to seek financial sanctions against Time Warner for its failing to cooperate with the investigation.

Disney Revisits Willows
Mark Friedman has been hired to write a script adaptation for the Walt Disney Co.'s live-action/computer-animated The Wind in the Willows movie, says The Hollywood Reporter. Based on the Kenneth Grahame book  about Mole, Badger and Mr. Toad and their various adventures, Disney had already done short animated film in 1949, which was release in "The Adventures Of Ichabod & Mr. Toad".

WB Series Hung Up On Bad Singers
"Superstar USA," a new WB series, is not about finding talent. Just the opposite, it gives terrible singers a shot at fame but doesn't let them know that they're being mocked.  The seven-episode series, claiming to be a satire of talent contests, premieres May 17. For those of us who remember "The Gong Show," nothing new here. Mike Fleiss, whose production credits include "Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire" and "The Bachelor" series, created the show. "These people believe they're the next pop superstar, even though they're horrible singers," Fleiss announced to the trade paper Daily Variety. He refered to the show as "a bizarro version of `American Idol.'"  When auditions were held around the country (Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Orlando, Fla., and Philadelphia), the production team turned away best singers, the WB said. This left a dozen "uniquely talented" performers who were picked to get dancing and singing lessons and the chance to compete for a "talent and recording deal" the network valued at $100,000.  Jordan Levin, the WB's chief executive officer, said, "This is a genre that is ripe for parody. And in the end, viewers will be won over by our superstar." Those who cringe at the idea can thank William Hung, who auditioned for "American Idol," whose, at best, inept singing and dancing have gained him a his own "Mrs. Miller" kind of fame. How sad are we as a country, that other people getting their dreams dashed is funny?

Some Casting On The Ring 2
Simon Baker (CBS' The Guardian) has been cast in The Ring 2. Baker, 34, is joining fellow Aussie Naomi Watts, which continues the tale of a videotape that kills its viewers. Hideo Nakata will direct the DreamWorks project, when it begins shooting in mid-May.

Light Dawns For Winger
Debra Winger has won the title role of the upcoming Lifetime original film "Dawn Anna." "Dawn" (based on a true story) tells the story of a single mother of four who suffers from a brain disease. After she recovers with the help of her family, she then has to face the mortality of one of her children. Winger will produce the film with her husband, Arliss Howard, who will direct. "Dawn" begins production in July.

Team Looks Into The Future
Variety reports that producer Lydia Dean Pilcher, director Katja von Garnier and screenwriter Sally Robinson will join together to create a movie adapted from Alice Hoffman's best-selling supernatural novel The Probable Future. Published by Doubleday, Hoffman's book tells of three generations of New England women whose youngest member suddenly has the ability to see how people will die. This will not be the author's first foray into film. Hoffman's fiction also served as source material for Warner's Practical Magic (which many credit as the source for the WB's "Charmed").

Plummer Is The Law
Christopher Plummer has been cast as Cardinal Bernard Law in "Our Fathers," Showtime's TV movie concerning the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal. Plummer was chosen to bring "authority, humanity, and an appropriately chilling detachment" to the part, Robert Greenblatt, Showtime Networks' entertainment president, announced Tuesday. Law was forced to resign as archbishop of Boston under fire for mishandling abuse cases. "Our Fathers" is based on a book by Newsweek's David France. Production on "Our Fathers" will begin in June. No air date has been announced.

Wonderfalls Gone, But The Creator Goes On
Bryan Fuller, co-creator and executive producer of Fox's canceled series Wonderfalls, has signed a two-year deal with series co-producer 20th Century Fox TV, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The deal, rumored to be in the seven-figure range, has Fuller's primary focus on developing new shows for the studio. He might while also work on an existing 20th TV series, the paper reported. "Bryan has an incredibly fresh and unique voice for television," 20th TV president Dana Walden told the Reporter. "He is one of the people we've identified over the past couple of years who sort of defines what this studio is trying to do in terms of distinctive and groundbreaking television."
