Canada Holds 2nd Annual Spacey Awards
Correspondent Robin turned us on to this story: The Space Channel has named the fan faves in genre TV for 2004, and most of the winners are on the edge of cancellation. Angel won as the Favourite TV Series category with 37% of the vote. Star Trek: Enterprise was second at 34%. Other nominees in that category included: Smallville (3rd), Alias and Taken. For Favorite Male TV Charater, James Marsters (Spike on "Angel") won handily. Other nominees were Lex Luthor/Smallville, Clark Kent/Smallville, Captain John Archer/Enterprise, Colonel Jack O'Neill/Stargate SG-1. In The Navy, Not!
When Don Bellisario's JAG spinoff Navy NCIS  debuted last fall, its title did cause some questions. NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service, right? Then isn't using Navy again in the title redundant? That's how Bellisario (creator of JAG and NCIS) always felt, but CBS out voted him. The suits at CBS wanted Navy in the name to keep his two military crime dramas linked in viewers' minds. But now, even the suits have changed their so called minds. "That NCIS has been labeled a JAG spinoff is good and bad," Bellisario told TV Guide Online. "It's not remotely like JAG. I hope to God it runs as long as JAG, but it's a completely different show! It does not look, feel, taste or smell like JAG. That's why, next season, we're dropping Navy off the title. It's just going to be NCIS." Will be more JAG-NCIS crossover? "No," the top gun says. "NCIS is its own thing and we want to keep it that way. I want to get it away from JAG. We want younger people. We're doing a show that should attract a younger audience. We've got good writing and good stars. Mark Harmon is hunky and still making those sexiest-star lists. Michael Weatherly is a really handsome guy, too, and funny. And we've got Sasha Alexander. I want the JAG audience, but I want a new audience, too. We've been holding our own against that juggernaut American Idol, which is very difficult. I want this to be a top 10 show."

Broadcasters Unhappy With Analog Shut-off Date
The broadcast industry opposed the plan Thursday that would bring digital TV to America by 2009, and then the government proposes to shut off the analog frequencies that television stations use now. In a letter to the FCC, the National Association of Broadcasters plus the heads of the major network affiliates organizations, told the  commissioners that the proposed plan of the agency's staff is an unworkable series of "shortcuts." FCC mass media bureau chief Ken Ferree rolled out the plan Wednesday (HR 4/14). Under this law, broadcasters must give the government the analog channels in use in exchange for new digital ones. That switch is set for 2006 or when 85% of the television audience can receive the digital TV signal. "The bureau's idea would not only fail to advance but also would retard the primary purpose of the transition, to deliver improved digital signals to the public and replace view reliance on analog-quality service," the executives wrote.
