Darth
Vader's New Costume Debuts On DVD
Fans will
get their first look at a new Darth Vader costume ( the one from the 2005
"Star Wars: Episode III" prequel) on the upcoming original trilogy DVD
collection, Lucasfilm announced Monday. A Darth Vader featurette, is included
that promises an interview with creator George
Lucas. He will discuss how Jedi warrior Anakin Skywalker is to became
the Dark Lord Vader. "We're going to see the evolution of this character
and go places with Darth Vader we've never gone before," reported Jim Ward,
Lucasfilm marketer and the DVD's executive producer. "Our fans have been
eagerly awaiting every morsel of `Episode III' as we divulge it. We're
giving it to them piece by piece." Most of the details, he admitted are
being saved for the final installment in the prequel trilogy, released
to theaters on May 19, 2005.
Ebert's
Tiny Films Film Festival
A movie
that cost less than $200 to produce is among the attractions at Roger
Ebert's sixth annual Overlooked
Film Festival. The festival, which opens Wednesday, includes big-budget
movies and smaller independent films, like "Tarnation"
by Jonathan Caouette,
which cost $187 to make on a computer. Film restoration expert Robert Harris
will kick off the festivities. Harris discovered a 70mm print of the 1962
Oscar-winning film, "Lawrence
of Arabia," in a studio vault and then went on to restore it, will
talk about restoration. The feature lineup also includes Gregory
Nava's "El Norte,"
Buster Keaton's masterpiece
"The General."
'Apprentice'
Spinoff In The Works
The entrepreneurial spirit knows no bounds for those involved with "The Apprentice."
There
is already talk at NBC about a spinoff to the Donald Trump-hosted hit. The follow-up which would follow "Apprentice" winner Bill Rancic over the next year as he oversees the construction of Trump International Hotel and Tower in Rancic's hometown of Chicago.
The discussionsm, we are assured, are in the early idea stage and that no formal deals have been made. "Apprentice" creator/executive producer Mark Burnett
admits that a follow-up series showing Rancic's progress "seems like a fairly obvious choice."
Mike
Leigh's 'Drake' At New Line
"Secrets
& Lies" director Mike
Leigh has signed a deal for his new film, "Vera
Drake," with New Line Cinema. It is expected to be released through Fine Line Features arthouse unit.
Stars are Imelda Staunton, Jim Broadbent, Heather Craney
and Philip Davis, and follows the story of an Englishwoman in the 1950s and her working-class family. However, the woman leads a secret life as an abortionist. "(The
film) contains a groundbreaking performance by Imelda Staunton and raises critically relevant issues in an emotionally involving family situation," said Michael Lynne (New Line co-chairman and co-CEO). New Line has
already distributed Leigh's 1993 project "Naked."
His more recent works include 1999's "Topsy-Turvy"
and 1996's "Secrets & Lies."
Six
New Fox TV Series in June
Fox
on Monday announced their television schedule that adds six fresh series
and includes the return of Paris
Hilton and Nicole Richie
in "The Simple Life 2."
Four of
the new shows will be scripted, unusual ata time when most summer network
fare is rerun or reality. Fox previously has had trouble getting new fall
series noticed because much of its October schedule is filled with postseason
baseball. But, the success of "The
O.C." last summer let Fox executives know that summer could be a launching
pad. Three of the new series will air on Wednesdays, including "The Simple
Life 2." "Quintuplets," with Andy
Richter as the father of a set of 15-year-old quints, and "Method &
Red," an re-imagining of "The
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" with rappers Method
Man and Redman, are
the other Wednesday entries. Both new dramas will be self-contained,
TV speak for a series that completes its story in one episode. "North Shore,"
about the young workers at a luxury hotel in Hawaii. "The Jury," from Barry
Levinson and Tom Fontana,
follows a crime through the eyes of a deliberating jury. Mark
Burnett's reality series, "Casino," peeking at life in a Las Vegas
hotel, finishes the new schedule. ABC will also have a miniseris
family drama, "The Days," about a busy family seen through the eyes of
their 14-year-old son. The network will again show fresh episodes of "The
Drew Carey Show."
Simpsons
Actors Still Holding Out
The
"strike" by the cast of Fox's The
Simpsons has made Fox consider juggling its Sunday-night lineup for
the fall season or replacing the voice ensemble, USA
Today reported Monday. The newspaper reported, given the network's
commitment to baseball and its backlog of six unaired episodes, no change
is would be implemented until January.
Nevertheless,
the network has to decide how to proceed before it can begin selling spots
in the 8:00 p.m. Sunday time slot. Many fans will remember that it was
Football pre-emptions that killed "Futurama."
While most involved observed that it was "highly unlikely" that Fox would
replace the cast members since "new voices would seem jarring to fans,"
we know that the voices of comic characters have been recreated in the
past. Henry Corden took
over the voice of Fred Flintstone after the passing of Alan
Reed in 1977. Barney Rubble has been alternately played by four actors.
All of the voices of Looney Tunes characters created by the late Mel
Blanc have, since the "Man of a Thousand Voices" passed away in 1989,
recreated by others, principally by his son Noel. Muppet character voices
created by Jim Henson
were reproduced by Henson's son Bryan after Henson's death in 1990. At
least four actors have recreated Clarence
Nash's Donald Duck since Nash's death in 1985. Indeed, as many know,
the voice of Mickey Mouse was originally provided by Walt
Disney himself, and has, over the years, been supplied by other actors.
