Mistmantle Chronicles
Miramax has bought rights for "Mistmantle Chronicles," a soon to be released trilogy of children's books by British author Margi McAllister. First book in the series, "Urchin of the Riding Stars," will be published in spring 2005 by Miramax Books in the U.S. and by Bloomsbury in the U.K., the second and third books will be out in 2006 and 2007. The stoories are about a group of animals, including squirrels, otters, hedgehogs and moles, living on an island hidden in mists.

Popeye, The CGI Man
Cartoon Brew has posted the first image from Popeye's new special and also offers its forums open for discussion. They also give an outline of the show online: "The cartoon strongman and his hulking nemesis Bluto have been buffed up by CGI for a Fox TV special due next fall. Though the movie celebrates the sailor's 75th anniversary, he has been well preserved by a life of 'no coffee, a lot of spinach and that sea air', says Mad About You's Paul Reiser, who is co-writer and producer. In Popeye's Voyage: The Search for Pappy, the updated Popeye will hunt for his dad and confront relationship issues. For example, Reiser asks, 'with a woman in his life, how does he get away with just sailing all the time?'"

Ex-Mouse Animators Mortgage Homes
Another group of Disney animators who were laid off at the Florida animation studio last January have opened a their own studio. Five animators, who worked on such features as The Lion King, Pocahontas, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and Brother Bear put the word out on Monday that they mortgaged their own homes to set up this home studio. They call it Project Firefly, and it is on the grounds of the Universal Studios theme park in Orlando. A first group of Florida animators, let go by Disney had already announced that they had opened up shop in Winter Garden, FL as Legacy Animation Studio, hoping to keep Walt Disney's legacy of hand-drawn animation alive.

NC-17 Films Coming Back?
We all know that there is a new wave of puritanism that is blanketing the broadcast media since the Janet Jackson episode, but to all backlashes, there are resultant backwashes.  Tuesday's Los Angeles Times  reports that there are at least three NC-17-rated films are being released this year, including Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers, which came out in February; Young Adam, which debuts on Friday; and High Tension, due later this fall. Lions Gate Releasing, which is distributing High Tension, has condemned the MPAA for rolling over and not using its clout to tell newspapers that they should reverse their policies that bar movie ads for NC-17 films. In an interview published in the Times, Lions Gate president Tom Ortenberg was quoted as saying, "We feel it's important to establish a legitimate adult rating. ... If the MPAA won't do it, we'll do it for them." In a separate article in the Times, David Mackenzie, who directed Young Adam, commented on the rating, which was meted out in his case, for a scene in which the characters are fully clothed, "I don't mind the idea of making grown-up films, perhaps reclaiming the idea of 'adult' from pornography. I don't mind if people under the age of 18 don't see the film as long as it doesn't become stigmatized because of it." The last major NC-17 film was released back in 1998.

What The World Needs Now, A Remake Of "Porky's"
Craig Moss and Steve Schoenburg are going to write a remake of 1982's "Porky's," for reasons known only to the bean counters. Howard Stern is executive producing, which should come as a shock to no one, and the working title is "Howard Stern Presents Porky's" . There, I think I have given this more space than it merits.

TV Land Will Go Dark During 'Friends' Finale
TV Land is going to pay tribute to NBC's Friends. On the day of the final episode of the sitcom, all TV Land programing will be preempted, and instead they will air six sitcom episodes featuring the cast "before they were Friends," in the words of the cable net's announcement. But, that's only the start, during the actual time that the season finale airs on NBC, TV Land plans to go dark. "I know it sounds crazy, but we don't believe we are rolling over and letting them win," TV Land head Larry W. Jones told Tuesday's Philadelphia Inquirer. "The reality is, our viewers are their viewers." The "classic shows" to air before and after the blackout include: Cheers (with Lisa Kudrow), Family Ties (Courteney Cox), Ferris Bueller (the 1990 sitcom with Jennifer Aniston), The Wonder Years (David Schwimmer), Just the 10 of Us (Matt LeBlanc) and Who's the Boss? (Matthew Perry).

Jared Harris, Mary Harron and Bettie Page
Jared Harris is reteaming with the director of "I Shot Andy Warhol," Mary Harron to work on Killer Films and HBO's "The Ballad of Bettie Page." Harris, who next plays in "Resident Evil 2," will be photographer John Willie, who photographed Page, who was a real-life pinup superstar in the 1950s. Page, played by Gretchen Mol was the subject of a Senate investigation into pornography, at the time her, by todays terms, rather tepid photos, were the high water mark of kink at the time. Harron & Guinevere Turner co-wrote the script.
