The
100 Greatest TV Characters of All Time
What is it we Americans have for Top 10, Top 100 lists? ``Top 100 American Films,'' ``Top 100 Heroes & Villains,'' ``Top 100 Stand-Up Comics Of All Time''
and last week Premiere Magazine had the ``Top 100 Movie Characters Of All Time.'' We love the competition I suppose, even though we get in fields where no one will agree on a final list, even the people who decided to
make the list. Well, Bravo has entered the fray in this poll picked
up by Correspondent Robin, and you can join in if you go to the poll The
100 Greatest TV Characters of All Time
Who
will you add to the list? Cosmo Kramer, or
Ralph Kramden? Homer Simpson or Carl Kolchak? Skully, Mulder, Crockett,
Tubbs, Munsters or Addamses? How about Lois and Hal? Lucy & Ricky?
Dan & Roseanne? With this Poll you will
get your chance to vote on a few of the characters that have become a part
of America, not just television history. They ask that you choose one answer
for each of the categories below and hit submit. The top five responses
in each could appear in the show. The results will be aired later this
year.
The
five categories:
Who
is your favorite non-human character? (Angel is listed)
Who
is your favorite odd couple?
Who
is your favorite character that was never seen on screen?
Who
is your favorite villain or group of villains?
Who
is your favorite TV kid or group of TV kids?
You
can also TYPE IN your favorite character in a currently running show.
In order
to vote you need to submit your e-mail address. You are limited to one
ballot per e-mail address. Votes received after 3 pm PT on April
23, 2004 will not be counted.

Rewrites On New Lines "Iron Man"
David
Hayter, whose credits include "X-Men"
and "X2: X-Men United,"
is now to rewrite "Iron
Man," New Line Cinema's adaptation of the Marvel Comics character.
In the comic, Iron Man's secret identity is that of billionaire industrialist
Anthony Stark, who develops an armored suit that allows him fly and shoot
repulsor rays, and be nearly invulnerable. Iron Man's 1960's comic book
origin involved Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong, and evolved into
Stark fighting spies, both political and industrial, while also battling
alcoholism. Sources say the movie, being seen as a franchise for the studio,
will now reflect a modern world climate, as well as modern technological,
political and societal trends.

Stores Get "Fog of War" On May 11
Errol
Morris' Oscar-winning documentary "The
Fog of War," that focuses on former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara,
is due on video on May 11, Columbia
TriStar Home Entertainment said. The documentary explores a vast arc
of history from the Cuban missile crisis to Vietnam through the eyes of
McNamara, who worked under Kennedy & Johnson. Morris, who also directed
such documentaries as "Fast,
Cheap & Out of Control," "The
Thin Blue Line" and "A
Brief History of Time," affirmed that he didn't have any agenda when
he began the interviews with McNamara in May 2001, the parallels between
the United States' current situation in Iraq and the war in Vietnam are,
none the less, unavoidable. "I'm not saying that America's current involvement
in Iraq is anything like Vietnam, but when listening to McNamara discuss
how the war in Vietnam was executed from a policy standpoint, one can't
help but draw parallels," Morris says. While using never-before-seen
archival footage, Morris illustrated a series of U.S. military conflicts.
From the firebombing of more than 100,000 Japanese civilians during World
War II to the world dangling on the edge of nuclear war during the Cuban
missile crisis in 1962 and similar threats during the war in Vietnam, there
are moments to bring a chill. But the documentary's most chilling moment,
comes as McNamara warns that if the lessons of the past have not been learned,
a nuclear catastrophe will be unavoidable. "The Fog of War" DVD has a suggested
retail price of $27, and the VHS version will be rental priced.
Donnie
Darko Getting New Theatrical Release
Donnie
Darko, the cult drama starring Jake
Gyllenhaal, is coming back to the theatres, and will feature 20 minutes
of new, never-before-seen footage. Newmarket
Films, the company that released the film in 2001, will now be unveiling
a director's cut at the Seattle
Film Festival on May 29. The new version is also said to have new visual
effects and music. "Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of
the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order
to come in under two hours," said writer-director Richard
Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete
the film." The film grossed just $515,545 for its the domestic box office
but has gained a cult following on DVD, and in that venue it has grossed
more than $10 million domestically.
A
Hip-Hop 'Guide to the Galaxy'?
The director
and producer of the movie version of Douglas
Adams' The Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy have found it necessary to defend their decision
to cast rap singer Mos Def
as the lead character. While being interviewed by Britain's Empire
magazine, director Garth
Jennings denied that it was his intention to turn the character of
Ford Prefect into a jive-talking anacronism. "I think that would be the
most appalling thing ever in the history of the world," he told them, then
adding: "I didn't know much about Mos Def before I met him and didn't think
that he was going to be right. But that's why I say, when you meet him,
he's the most wonderful actor first and foremost but he's also incredibly
funny, incredibly clever. He just fits the brief in a most unexpected way
really." Def starred in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play Top
Dog/Underdog. As for criticism that the movie looks to bew straying
from the original Adams novel, producer Nick
Goldsmith reportedly remarked that the movie is not intended as "a
literal adaptation. It's not like Lord
of the Rings, where you have a book and you want to turn that into
a film which is as faithful to its source as possible. There is no single
definitive Hitchhiker's Guide story, and never has been." One wonders if
he would have said that, if the author had still been alive to defend his
screenplay.

Austin
Powers star Seth Green's
dream has come true, the Muppets nut play a delivery man on Sesame
Street. Green hopes his enthusiasm and unshaven appearance doesn't
frighten kids. He said, "I hope I don't come off too crazy. I flew to New
York to do Sesame Street directly from a three-month film shoot in New
Zealand. I hadn't slept. I didn't shave. I looked insane." Kind of like,
oh I don't know, one of the Muppets maybe?
TNT
To Get Their Own Crime Show
TNT
has been known for reruns and some good "Made For Cable" movies, but that
may change. According to industry souces TNT is expected today to announce
as many as 10 different projects in development for series entries. Know,
also, for its "We know drama" tagline, the cable network is now developing
a battalion of one-hour projects that echo some of the genre's familiar
themes: precincts, courts and hospitals. "Law
& Order" reruns have been a staple for the schedule, and creating a similarly crime-flavored procedural is appetizing for the programmers. Here are some of the projects in the works:
**A crime drama centering around the Los Angeles Police Department's elite SWAT unit. The series followes the recruitment of five top cops who will
be charged with hunting down Southern California's worst fugitives.
**A series that will focus on an LAPD bunco unit.
**"Hell's Kitchen," a drama about an Irish-American family, where criminals and cops live in the same home.
**"The System," in which the protagonist, a Miami-based prosecutor, often blurs the line between legal rights winning the case.
**A medical drama with a split focus: Emergency medical technicians and Emergency room doctors. Each episode
would show an incident from the event when the trauma occurs to the eventual outcome.
"Sky
Captain" Circling Till September

"Sky
Captain and the World of Tomorrow," a retro-futuristic action-adventure
movie (and how many of those do we see on a yearly basis?) starring Jude
Law, Gwyneth Paltrow
and Angelina Jolie, is
not going to be landing in your local theatres during the crowded summer
months. Paramount Pictures
has decided to postpone the film, which was scheduled for release June
25. The new date, nearly three months later now, is Sept. 17. The
studio said the shift comes because of moves on the part of its competition.
"Sky Captain," had been scheduled to open a just a week before Sony
Pictures' "Spider-Man
2," which was originally set to bow Friday, July 2. But, Sony recently
announced it was going to move "Spider-Man's" up two days to Wednesday,
June 30. With "Spider-Man" previews expected to take place Tuesday night,
June 29, that would have left "Sky Captain" just four days to build up
a market before "Spider-Man." "To have a window of a mere four days
seemed to be wrong," Paramount vice chairman Rob Friedman decided. "We
have a great movie that the public is excited about and the media is excited
about. With think it's a bigger opportunity in what is right now an extraordinarily
crowded summer to put (the movie) in a less competitive situation where
we will have a greater opportunity." On its new Sept. 17 date, "Sky Captain"
is expected to find a clearer field. The date currently appears to be host
to only one wide release, Warner
Bros. Pictures' "Duma, "
directed by Carroll Ballard.

Pitching,
In The Black, Or Just Dark Fury It's Riddick
Just released
by renowned animator Peter
Chung ("The Animatrix")
comes "The
Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury", the introduction to all-new Riddick
universe. When Riddick is captured by bounty hunters, he battles soldiers
of fortune and vicious creatures in the lethal slaughter cells of a massive
starship. Riddick's night vision and ruthlessness are all that stand between
him and a fate literally worse than death. This animated sci-fi DVD bridges
the stories of "Pitch Black"
and "The Chronicles of Riddick".
