Best
Director Of All?
There
is always something you can do that does nothing but start fights. That
is, to pick
"The
Top ____ (fill in a number) Of Anything Subjective." Science Fiction Films,
Opera Tenors, Banana Splits, whatever. No one will agree, and everyone
will argue. This time in a poll commissioned by the UK`s Empire
movie magazine
Steven Spielberg has been voted the greatest
director of all time. Alfred
Hitchcock and Martin
Scorsese came in second and third respectively.
Editor Ian Freer says,
" Steven Spielberg is the closest thing in
movies to resemble the impact of The
Beatles. A cultural phenomenon, his adventures
with sharks, UFOs, whip-crackin` archaeologists and ETs, plus searching
historical dramas like Schindler`s
List and Saving
Private Ryan have defined the movie-going life of an entire generation."
The top ten ranked as follows: 1. Steven
Spielberg, 2. Alfred
Hitchcock, 3. Martin
Scorsese, 4. Stanley
Kubrick, 5. Ridley
Scott, 6. Akira
Kurosawa, 7. Peter
Jackson, 8. Quentin
Tarantino, 9. Orson
Welles, 10. Woody
Allen. The inclusion of Jackson & Tarintino
might suprise those expecting names like John
Huston , John Ford
& Charlie Chaplin
on the list.
Edith
Piaf
Olivier
Dahan will direct Marion
Cotillard as Edith Piaf in a $24 million budget chronicle of the tumultuous
life of one of most famous and beloved singers in the history of France.
The French release is set for October 11th 2006.
Sin
City 2
"Let`s
see, `Sin City 2` we`ll be starting to shoot that in January, which means
our preproduction will start in February ,"
Robert
Rodriguez said to SCI
FI Wire about his & graphic novelist Frank
Miller `s plans to begin shooting "Sin
City 2" starting in January 2006, though cast
and script are not yet finalized. "We will
shoot A Dame to Kill For next, and maybe something else. And I don`t have
the cast set, not yet." At the moment Rodriguez
said he is working on the special DVD edition of the first film, scheduled
for release just before Christmas. The DVD will divide the movie into its
three graphic-novel stories, plus some extra footage. "You`ll
be able to see each story separately. You can watch Yellow Bastard, Big
Fat Kill or Hard Goodbye, and there`s a lot of behind-the-scenes featurettes
being planned."
X-Men
Change Direction
Aint
it Cool reports that they have sources
that state on the two potential replacements for
Matthew
Vaughn as director of "
X-Men 3 ." Here`s their story: "It`s
someone who studios like, who is considered an A-list director, but sort
of by default. No matter what, though, my source wouldn`t give me a name.
. . I got two names confirmed from inside the Pico Lot. . . . either we`ll
have X3 directed by John Moore
, who did solid, sturdy jobs with both `
Behind Enemy Lines ` and `Flight
of the Phoenix ,` or Brett
Ratner , [after all] what just fell apart? `
Rush Hour 3 .` Avi Arad wasn`t kidding when he called the film `controversial,`
either. Three major characters that absolutely should not die, die. Really
dead, too. Not Spock Dead. And one mutant who should not lose her powers,
loses her powers permanently. Really loses them, too. And the sex scene.
. . when you see who does what to who. . . oh, boy. The entire X-MEN universe
may face some incredible overhauls, and it`s going to be fascinating to
see what fandom does when faced with this stuff."

Actor Scott Madej has added a graphic on his official
site and promises he`ll have an X-Men related
announcement on Monday.
