MOVIE & TV NEWS

Medium Animation
Creator of NBC's hit series Medium, Glenn Gordon Caron spoke to SCI FI Wire about the upcoming two-hour third-season premiere. He said: "When I was doing Moonlighting, I would keep this little list of things I wanted to do. A lot of them I didn't get done, by the way. I remember one time saying, on the list, Bruce Willis should strike a match on the edge of the screen and light a cigarette. Stupid little visual things. And, I thought to myself, and I actually said it, I think, to [NBC Entertainment president] Kevin Reilly a year ago, [I] said we should do something involving animation. Because part of . . .  the trick of our show is, . . .  we try and present this woman who leads a fairly modest life who has this extraordinary gift. It's in the extraordinary gift that we get to do sort of phantasmagoric things visually."  In the premiere, "Four Dreams," animation by Johnny Bravo creator Van Partible represents the dreams of Bridgette (Maria Lark), daughter of psychic Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette). Traditional 2-D hand-drawn animation, those cartoon dreams start out as light comedic bits, but gradually turn darker as they present Bridgette's premonitions of death. Caron continued: "The more I talked about [animation], the more I was convinced there was a show in it. The cartoon thing was to me also,      . . . I thought, frankly, . . .  so much of what we deal in is death. And when I met [the real] Allison Dubois, the thing that struck me and touched me so deeply when she sits down and tells you her stories, you think, 'My, God, this woman has Radio Death going on in her head all the time.' She sees ghosts, and most of the ghosts that come to her don't come to her because they've had a good life and a sweet death. They come to her because something awful and violent has happened. She sees a very, very dark vision of the world. . . .  You're always looking for other ways to . . . communicate this. How do I keep it fresh, and, frankly, how do I shock you? Because part of it is I have to shock you in order to impress you with just how awful things are, and you realize at a certain point you can do that with a cartoon, and in some ways, it's more unsettling. You can get away with things in a cartoon, because cartoons are inherently violent." "Medium" returns on NBC at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Nov. 15 then goes back to its regular Wednesday 10 p.m. timeslot the next week.

The Dresden Files
Production has begun in Toronto on the SCI FI Channel's "The Dresden Files."  The series, based on Jim Butcher's novel series,  will be a 12 episode show starring Paul Blackthorne as Harry Dresden, a Chicago-based private wizard. Terrence Mann has joined the cast as Dresden's trusted confidant, Bob. "The Dresden Files" also stars Valerie Cruz as police Lt. Murphy and Conrad Coats as Morgan. I don't know any of the cast or production folks, but Butcher is a good man a deserves a hit. Give the show a watch when it debuts in January 2007, okay?

Iron Man DTV
Animated News reports that Marvel's latest direct-to-video venture, "The Invincible Iron Man," has a January 23rd release. The DVD will have the following bonus features: "an alternate opening sequence, two featurettes (The Origin of Iron Man and The Hall of Iron Man Armor), a preview of Marvel's next movie called Dr. Strange, and a trailer gallery." DVD Active has more details

Bryan Singer News
Cinescope (under its new name Mania) says "According to Superman executive producer Chris Lee, the sequel to Superman Returns will likely fly it's way into theaters in 2009.  I am assuming the date would be set somewhere in the Summer of '09, with June being the most likely home.  The film is expected to start production mid to late 2007. In other Superman news, IESB.com reported that the sequel's working title has been set as Superman: The Man of Steel. In ever MORE Superman (and Marvel) related news, director Bryan Singer told the newspaper that he has also been offered the fourth X-Men movie, but said he wouldn't have time to take on another large-scale project before the next Superman gets underway. He added that he is interested, however, in seeing the script for the proposed X-Men spinoff, Wolverine."  IESB reports that the "Superman Returns" sequel now has a working title - "Superman: The Man of Steel." Warners said 'no comment' on the article, then, later, said that the title "may not be accurate."

The Hollywood Reporter says that Chris Palmer has replaced Tim McCanlies as the director on the Warner Bros Pictures' "A Spell for Chameleon."  Based on the first of Piers Anthony's Xanth novel series, the film has Warners hoping for a Harry Potter type franchise. In the kingdom of Xanth everyone has magical powers except for one young man, exiled for having none. He later finds his true gift and returns to save the kingdom. Palmer said: "The 'Harry Potter' books are about magic people and Muggles, humans who have no powers and, ironically, the people reading them are Muggles themselves. So I like this idea of turning that around. I like how (the main character's) lack of magical abilities ends up saving the day."

Six Becomes Them!
Variety is reporting that Fox will present "Them," an hourlong alien-themed project from  Jonathan Mostow and writers David Eick and John McNamara. Based on the graphic novel "Six," written by Michael Oeming and Daniel Berman the story involves a sleeper cell of extraterrestrial terrorists who take the shape of humans. They start having problems when they find themselves experiencing human emotions, which is like a drug to them. Mostow said: "On a surface level, it's a really cool science fiction thriller. But underneath, it's a very provocative show that's really going to explore what it means to be human, to be a person. The scariest thing about terror cells is how decentralized they are -- so their moves are almost impossible to anticipate."

Sex and the City Movie May Be Back On
OK! magazine reports that HBO and Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon are in "Substantial talks" about a movie version of "Sex and the City." There has been on and off discussion about the film since the series ended a six-year run in 2004, but at least two of the original stars had committed themselves to other projects. A studio insider informed OK! that each of the four actresses is now available for the movie, saying: "Obviously, there is still a lot to be worked out contractually, but it would be amazing to get this project off the ground."

Super Giveaway!
Warner Home Video and Superhero Hype! have announced a giveaway  of 3 sets of 3 of the studio's November Superman DVD releases. That would include "Lois & Clark-The New Adventures of Superman: The Complete Fourth Season," "Adventures of Superman: The Complete Fifth & Sixth Seasons" and "Superman: The Theatrical Serials Collection." Go here to qualify.

The Amateur
Hugh Jackman's Seed Productions has signed with Fox 2000 to remake "The Amateur." The 1981 film was based on the Robert Littell novel. Jackman is producing and will star as a CIA cryptographer whose fiancee dies in a plane crash caused by terrorists. He then forces his bosses to train him to exact revenge.

Gideon's Gift
Tis the seson to hear about Christmas Movies! "Gideon's Gift" is a novel by Karen Kingsbury that is set to be filmed with Christian Slater and Elle Fanning in the leads. Don't expect to see this one this Christmas season since shooting doesn't begin till early February in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the film Slater is Big Earl Gibson, who has lost the only two things precious to him, his wife and daughter. He has abandoned his belief in God and is now lives on the street. Fanning plays Gideon, an eight-year-old leukemia patient determined to reach the heart of this lonely and hurting man.

Smith is Manchild
Fans of the BBC series "Manchild" can look forward to a U.S. version on the Showtime cable network. The pilot will star Kevin SmithJames Purefoy, John Corbett, Paul Hipp as four men knee-deep in midlife crises. Smith plays Paul, the cynic of the group, a divorced man who loathes himself, his ex and his ex's perfect new husband. Purefoy (who is wrapping production on its second and final season of HBO's "Rome") will play Joe, the leader of the circle. He frequents the hottest new clubs and doesn't date anyone over 25.

Presidential Couple Returns to "24"
Fans might have thought to be done with the dysfunctional presidential couple from last season's "24." But Emmy-nominated Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart will return in the show's sixth season. Theformer President Charles Logan and his emotionally challenged wife, Martha Logan will be back in recurring roles. Logan's place in the Oval Office has been taken this season by Wayne Palmer (D.B. Woodside), the brother to former President David Palmer.

Lucas Kills Indy 4
Screenwriter Frank Darabont says that the fourth Indiana Jones movie was ready to film two years ago, until George Lucas didn't like his script. Darabont said: "That was terrifically frustrating. I worked for over a year on that; I worked very close with Steven Spielberg. He was ecstatic with the result and was ready to shoot it two years ago. He was very, very happy with the script and said it was the best draft of anything since Raiders of the Lost Ark. That's really high praise and gave me a real sense of accomplishment, especially when you love the material you're working on as much as I love the Indiana Jones films." Then: "Lucas read it and said, 'Yeah, I don't think so, I don't like it.' And then he resets it to zero when Spielberg is ready to shoot it that coming year, [which] is a real kick to the nuts. You can only waste so much time and so many years of your life on experiences like that, you can only get so emotionally invested and have the rug pulled out from under you before you say enough of that."

The Dirt: Confessions Of The World's Most Notorious Rock Band
Motley Crue's 2001 autobiography "The Dirt: Confessions Of The World's Most Notorious Rock Band" will go before the cameras soon. Band members Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee will be played by unknown actors, but it's the cameos that are making news. Christopher Walken will play Ozzy Osbourne, who toured with the band and appears in the book snorting a line of live ants and taking LSD each day for a year. Val Kilmer has been signed to play David Lee Roth, at the height of his battle with reality.  Vince Neil said: "How funny is that going to be. We're doing big, giant cameos with those people."

Sin City 2 Not Going To Happen?
There are rumours all over the net that "Sin City 2" has been postponed indefinitely and Angelina Jolie being pregnant again may be at the root of it. Robert Rodriguez was holding off for her, wanting to cast her in the key role of Ava Lord, the 'Dame to Kill For.' She has recently let the production know that she wouldn't be available, the sudden shut down seems like a logical course of action. Those same rumor mongers have hinted that Rodriguez has just grown a bit tired of the whole Sin City thing, possibly having suffered so many disagreements with Frank Miller (who can reportedly be a bit arrogant about and controlling of his story and characters) that he could pass on the entire thing.

A Jealous Ghost
Megan Holley is set to adapt the A.N. Wilson novel "A Jealous Ghost" for Paramount VantageKirsten Dunst will star and produce the supernatural thriller that tells of a young woman who, while studying in London, begins a relationship with one of her professors, and then starts seeing demons.

Sarah Connor Cast
Lena Headey has been set to play the title role in Fox's "The  Sarah Connor Chronicles." The show will follow the title character starting where "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" ended and shooting begins Nov. 27 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

3 lbs.
This is a show that I will be watching. That aside, I'm not sure CBS knows what it truly has here. Somebody said, "Damn, that House is successful. We should have a show about a Doctor who is not a nice guy, but brilliant." And, like Henry II speaking of Beckett, so it was done. But along the way to creating this drama about brain surgery, someone inserted a lyrical note that was unexpected. Counter balancing Stanley Tucci as the no-nonsense genius (he refers to the brain as "Wires in a box") they brought in Mark Feuerstein who is touched by the wonder that is the mind. What they got here is a cousin to one of my favorite medical shows of all time. If they let the cast expand a little and continue touching the heart as well as the mind, this could be the "Chicago Hope" that was. There is nothing more complimentary that I can say than that. Of course they could screw it up in coming weeks (the show debuts Tue. Nov. 14 10:00 PM EST, 9:00 CST) but I am ever hope ful that this one will continue the promise of the pilot. But, that's the way the mind works, isn't it?

Shrek the Halls
ABC plans the Christmas special "Shrek the Halls," to be voiced by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas. The show will debut on December 2007. Sources said the pact is for 15 years, with ABC set to rerun the special around the holidays every year. Stephen McPherson, ABC Entertainment president, said: "Family classics are a cornerstone of our brand, and 'Shrek the Halls' will provide warm memories year after year and be a great addition to our library of holiday favorites." Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO,  said: "The time has come to celebrate the joys of the holiday season with Shrek and his family and see how Christmas would play out in his world. Having this special on broadcast television is another really important piece of how we're trying to build this franchise." Katzenberg said the TV special will be pick up where DreamWorks' upcoming "Shrek the Third" leaves off, and be "very much in keeping with the style and sensibility of the movies."
