MOVIE & TV NEWS

The Thing Remake
Variety reports that Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures are planning to remake John Carpenter's "The Thing." Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, while David Foster will executive produce the script by Ronald D. Moore. No director has been named. Barely mentioned in the article is the fact that the Carpenter film was, in itself, a remake of "The Thing from Another World" both of which were based John W. Campbell Jr. 1938 short story "Who Goes There?" The Carpenter film returned to the orginal story to tell of a shape-shifting creature who terrorizes researchers at an Arctic facility.   The filmmakers say they "consider the new film to be more 'a companion piece' to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake."

Camp Creepy Time
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that DreamWorks and Nick Movies are in talks to pick up "Camp Creepy Time," by Gina Gershon and her brother DannGershon. The story tells of a 13-year-old boy who must rescue his fellow campers when he finds out that aliens make up the entire camp staff.

Weinstein/Blockbuster Deal
The Weinstein Company has announced a four-year deal with Blockbuster to give the rental company exclusive rights to their theatrical and direct-to-video movies. The two companies indicated that they will share in the rental revenue. In a statement, Bob and Harvey Weinstein say: "The unique combination of Blockbuster's established in-store retail experience with the power of their online subscription service was one of the biggest factors that attracted us to this alliance."

X-Men 4?
Coming Soon reports that Shawn Ashmore said at a press conference: "I know they are doing a Wolverine prequel and I've heard a rumor about a Magneto film . . .  those are all in the past like prequels and origin stories, so I don't know. There are rumors about an 'X-Men 4,' but as far as I've been told 'X3' was going to be the last big ensemble 'X-Men' movie. I would love if they made another one, but I'm not sure that they will. I have a contract if they make another one, then I have one more film." And about rumors of a an X-Men spin-off (or sequel) based on the younger mutants, he asid: "It could be real. It could have been leaked from somewhere, but officially from the people who are actually making the movies, I haven't heard anything like that."

First Season Sale
We try not to be a shill for Amazon, but they are having a holiday DVD sale that is worth mentioning. It is located over here  and has $15.98 prices for first season collections like "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate: Atlantis," "Mister Ed," "Dead Like Me," "The Magnificent 7," "Jeremiah," "Fame" and the complete revival series of "Dark Shadows." There are other titles, it is worth a look. Here they have $29.99 sets of seasons 1-3 of "Nip/Tuck" and seasons 1 & 2 of "Veronica Mars."

Production begins in early 2007 for Rogue Pictures' "Doomsday" starring Rhona Mitra. Neil Marshall will write and direct the story set three decades after a lethal virus tore through a major country, leading to the country's walling off. The virus, known as "the Reaper," then resurfaces in a different country, an elite group, lead by Mitra's character, is dispatched to find a cure. They are then shut off from the rest of the world and must battle a world that has become a waking nightmare.

Warren's Catalog
A drama inspired by the life of Diane Warren, who wrote songs for a wide range of musicians from Aerosmith to Celine Dion, is in development Lifetime Television. The untitled one-hour project related the story of a fictional songwriter in the midst of trying to start her career and dealing with a large, overbearing and dysfunctional family. The project was originally developed for ABC. It will feature music from Warren's catalog, including hits as well as new tunes that she will write for the series. Warren will be an executive consultant.

Miller: "I've got a lot."
Frank Miller told SCI FI Wire: "Look at my bookshelves, I've got a lot." He has many tales he'd like to see filmed, among them "Hard Boiled," human-like robots. He said: "I'd like to do Hard Boiled. I think it would be extraordinarily visual. It's one of the blackest comedies that could possibly ever be done. And I would like to someday tell the story of [Give Me Liberty's] Martha Washington, but that would mean a lot of hours. I'd have to find the right actress and the right format to do it in." He is also planning to write and direct "The Spirit," based on the comic strip and comic-book hero created in 1940 by the legendary Will Eisner.  He added: "The Spirit seems to be happening. I'm typing away."

Heroes Casting, House History!
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
Michael Ausiello at TV Guide says: "Fanboys, prepare to piddle yourself. Christopher Eccleston - - - the original Dr. Who from the current Sci Fi/BBC series - - -  is joining the cast in January in a really super (tee-hee) role. Speaking of cool casting, wait until you see who's ******* ****'s ****. You're going to flip" and: "There's an emotional episode coming up in February in which Dr. Crabby Pants bonds with a rape victim and confides something shocking about his troubled relationship with his dad. So now it can be said: It's Dad's fault House is the way he is. Glad that mystery's been clear."

The Monstrous Memoirs of a Mighty McFearless
Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Walt Disney Pictures will adapt "The Monstrous Memoirs of a Mighty McFearless." by Ahmet Zappa. Tim Firth will write the screenplay about the brother and sister who learn their family is part of a long line of monster hunters. The squabbling pair must work together to battle the most diabolical creature in the universe.

Moore's Elstree Appeal
Roger Moore has made a plea in hopes that a buyer to come forward to save the 80-year-old Elstree Film Studios. The studio, where Alfred Hitchcock directed, and where both the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films were produced, were purchased by Hertsmere Borough Council in 1996 because no other buyer showed up. Moore said: "Hertsmere Council extended it a lifeline when it needed it most, and invested heavily. Now that they are seeking to pass on the ownership, I hope that an equally passionate and caring owner can be found; and help take the studio into one of the most exciting periods of film and new media production."

Happy Feet
A pretty interesting story in Steve Fritz's Animated Shorts column at Newsarama is about Happy Feet, and about how  George Miller finally began production on "Happy Feet" rather than a new "Mad Max" movie because of the start of the second Iraq War in 2003.

Shadow Divers
Peter Weir will direct "Shadow Divers" for Fox. The project, based on Robert Kurson's nonfiction "Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Discovered Hitler's Lost Sub," tells of a pair of the world's foremost salvage divers who discover a sunken U-boat 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey. The young divers risk their lives to identify the submarine.

MGM Plans 2 Hobbits
Harry Sloan (MGM's chief executive) spoke to the European Media Leaders Summit in London and gave some hints about the studio's path to Hobbiton. First,  yes there will be two films and yes, MGM was in advanced talks with Peter Jackson to direct the two movies. The first film, he said, is to be a direct adaptation of The Hobbit, then the second would be made up from "footnotes and source material connecting 'The Hobbit' with 'Lord of the Rings." Production, according to Sloan, isn't likely until 2008 or even 2009.

Lost Moments
ABC is planning to air "Lost Moments," a dozen 30-second bits of never-before-seen footage from upcoming episodes. The idea is to run them randomly during the network's new series "Day Break," appearing once per episode beginning Nov. 15, then they will be moved over to ABC.com.

TiVo Merging PC & TV
TiVo wants to add a new dimension to the DVR world. Besides allowing viewers to record shows from broadcast and cable TV, they now want to let their owners download movies and other video off the Internet and watch them directly on their TV sets. Tom Rogers, TiVo CEO, said: "Broadband video is growing rapidly on the Web, but the television will continue to be the key way viewers want to watch video. Our overall goal is to provide as many types of content in as many formats to be displayable on the television through TiVo." Microsoft said that users of its Xbox game system would soon do the same thing, and Apple announced that it plans to introduce a device, tentatively called iTV, early next year for the same purpose.

Aguilera on CSI: NY
First Kevin Federline on CSI, and now Christina Aguilera is going to guest star on "CSI: New York." The February episode is about battered women, an issue close to Aguilera's heart. She grew up in an abusive home and is a major contributor to a women's shelter in her hometown of Pittsburgh. Anthony Zuiker, CSI executive producer, says: "Christina's a fan of the show, and we're excited to have her. The episode will probably explore the topic of battered women." While Aguilera's music will be featured in the episode, she won't play herself.

The Sadhu
Variety reports that Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in another big screen adaption of a comic book, this one called "The Sadhu." Written by Virgin Comics co-founder Deepak Chopra, Cage plays a man named James Jenson, a soldier who travels to India during colonial times and transforms into a spiritual warrior. Sharad Devarajan, Virgin Comics CEO, said: "The Sadhu is a bold, visual epic that taps into one of India's most heralded spiritual traditions."

Bond Leaves Britain?
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are threatening to move the Bond franchise from Britain saying it's too expensive. Wilson blamed rising costs in the British capital and blasts the British Government for failing to help. He said: "London is the most expensive city in the world right now. To bring talent here and put them up for long periods of time and the cost of doing business here is a factor." Such a move could mean that "Casino Royale" would be the last Bond movie filmed at Pinewood Studios. A Spokesperson for the UK Film council said:  "We will be doing all we can to ensure that every film that can shoot in the UK, including Bond, does."

Evolution's Captain
Chase Palmer whose fictional mystery thriller about Alfred Hitchcock, "Number 13," is scheduled to begin shooting this winter with Dan Fogler as the Master of Suspense,  has another controversial project in the offing.  Based on the book "Evolution's Captain: The Dark Fate of the Man Who Sailed Charles Darwin Around the World," written by Peter Nichols, the story follows Robert FitzRoy, the captain of the H.M.S. Beagle, and the relationship he developed with Charles Darwin.

Double Cross
Infomercial producer Mark Williams plans to film the novel "Double Cross," the story Sam Giancana. Giancana, nicknamed "Momo" because of his unpredictable vicious behavior, was assassinated in 1975 just before he was to appear before a Senate committee investigating CIA and Mafia links to plots to kill Fidel Castro. The 1992 book says that he ordered the deaths of John F. Kennedy and Mailyn Monroe. Alfonse Ruggiero Jr. will write the screenplay.

Til Death Do Us Part
Court TV is producing its first original scripted series, "'Til Death Do Us Part." The show will be hosted by "The Groom Reaper," played by filmmaker John Waters. 13 half-hour episodes have been ordered, each of which will dramatize stories inspired by true stories of happily married couples who end up with one murdering the other. Waters says he feels "right at home as an actor" among the "unbelievably bizarre and sometimes gruesomely funny stories." The show will premeire in early 2007 on Court TV and Canadian broadcaster Global Television (under the title "Love You to Death").

Aronofsky Looks Ahead
SCI FI Wire talked to Darren Aronofsky, director of the upcoming movie The Fountain, and he told them that his next film will be either a large-scale biblical epic (with fantasy elements) or a small, intimate reality based film. Aronofsky said: "The next project we haven't announced yet, but . . .  we're working on . . . something that's very, very big and something that's very, very small. I just want to start shooting something in '07, because [The Fountain] took a long time, and I want to do something that's going to get me to set a lot quicker. I mean, [in] the last six years I've worked with actors for [only] 60 days, and I want to get back to set. We are working on something that's biblical in nature, and, luckily, that can mean a lot of different things. The big project is very, very fantasy-based. . . . [And] all my fantasy stuff leans towards science fiction." Aronofsky's flim, The Fountain, opens nationwide on Nov. 22.

TV DVD News
TVShowsOnDVD.com is telling us the nostalgic science fiction show "Space Academy" is being rleased, that story is posted here. There is also news of the release, finally, of "The Practice' over here. "Prince Valiant" news is here, and more classic Dr. Who is here.

Play Misty for Me
A strong rumor out there on the newsgroups and netsite is that Ben Affleck is in negotiation to produce and direct the Universal Pictures remake of Clint Eastwood's 1967 directorial debut "Play Misty for Me." Eastwood also starred in the original as a DJ who is stalked by his ex-lover turned deranged fan who obsesses about him and the song "Misty." Jason Smilovic is mentioned as the writer, and Eastwood himself may also produce. No word if Affleck would do double duty as Eastwood did in the original.

The Spirit
Frank Miller told IGN about about the Will Eisner adaptation, saying: "We're working on the script right now. We've got a good strong story to work with, and we're hoping to be in production either spring or fall. Either that or The Spirit will be the next thing I shoot. Either me and Robert [Rodriguez] on Sin City 2 or me on The Spirit. It all depends on where the pieces are on both projects. Sin City 2 is scripted, so it's mainly a matter of Robert's schedule and all the other production stuff."

Empire
The Hollywood Reporter says that Joel Silver has picked up "Empire." The story shows the death of the president and vice president evolving into a bloody civil war. A single operative is being framed for the attacks and strives to find the truth and clear his name. No screenwriter has been named.

Nielsen & DVRs
Nielsen Research has published a report that 84 percent of Nielson families record their favorite shows and watch them within three days after recording them. The study is part of their larger survey of viewing habits of DVR users and how they should be treated in negotiating deals with advertisers.
