Live
Action JLA?
Comics
Continuum has been looking into a lot of rumors about a possible
Justice League live-action television series. The CW's
Smallville has
featured appearances by versions of Aquaman,
Flash, Cyborg,
Green Arrow and
Martian Manhunter.
The first three of those are set to return to the show on an upcoming episode
called "Justice."
The episode, under tight network security, will be one of the series' most
expensive. An inside source told the Continuum that DC Comics heroes
will probably be appearing in yet another episode before the end of the
sixth season. Al Gough,
executive producer, denies plans for a Justice League series. If
a second "League"
episode happens, air time seems to point towards May sweeps.

Dark
Knight News
Lots
of movement in the cave these days. The
San Jose Mercury News spoke to Heath
Ledger about the part of the Joker. The actor said: "I
still feel like it's a character I've never done before, and I'm going
to be donning a mask. I'm not really thinking about the commercial consequences.
Maybe I should be. But at this point, it's just an exciting next step."
Also Moviehole.net reports
that Rachel McAdams
may be joing the cast of the sequel, while Batman-on-Film.com
thinks she may be being considered for the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman.
The
Mist
UGO.com
quotes Thomas Jane
as saying the following about Frank
Darabont's feature film version of Stephen
King's "The Mist":
"Well, I have an e-mail from Frank right
here. Why don't we open it and see what's going on with The Mist? [reads]
He says that he just heard my deal closed today, and he's happy and looking
forward to working with me." The
Dimension Films
project begins production this Spring.

The
New York Daily News has posted an article about director Zack
Snyder and actor Gerard
Butler putting the Frank
Miller historical tale to the sword. Butler said: "I
trained so hard for this particular piece - it was fifteen guys and it
all worked fine in the gym when you knew that Johnny comes, and then David
and then Chad. But then suddenly you dress them all the same as Persians
and you're like, 'Who the f - - - [is who]?' At the last minute, we're
running out of time, and Zack came over to me and said, 'Look,
I think maybe we should use a stuntman.' I
think he just didn't know how badass I was yet."

Free
Blockbuster Rental
Hoping
to lure back some of the customers it has lost to Netflix,
Blockbuster is trying a promotion that will give a free movie rental for
each Netflix address flap brought in. In Home
Media Retailing magazine, John Antioco, Blockbuster head honcho,
said: "We want these movie fans to experience
getting the movies they want without the wait so they never have to be
without a movie." Yeah, rather than have
a stack sit on the table for months.
The
Innocent Man
George
Clooney, Grant
Heslov and Warner
Independent Pictures have picked up the rights to John
Grisham's non-fiction book "The
Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town."
It is a true story about how a gross miscarriage of justice sent innocent
Ron Williamson to Oklahoma's death row for 11 years. A big part of the
evidence against Williamson was the eyewitness testimony of the man who
was ultimately himself convicted of the murder.
The
Express
"The
Express" is the true story of Ernie Davis,
the first black player to win college football's Heisman Trophy. While
no one has been cast in the role of Davis, Gary
Fleder will direct and Dennis
Quaid will play Davis' coach. Davis, who broke college football
records and racial barriers in the early 1960s playing at Syracuse University,
was drafted into the NFL, but his career was cut short when he was diagnosed
with leukemia. Production starts in March.
The
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Thomas
Dekker will jump from Zach in "Heroes"
to the role of John Connor in Fox's
drama pilot "The Sarah Connor Chronicles,"
a "Terminator"
spin off project. IMDb says the
show: "Set after the events in 'Terminator
2' Sarah Connor and her son John, trying to stay under-the-radar from
the government as they plot to destroy the computer network Skynet in hopes
of preventing Armageddon." Sarah
Connor will be played by Lena
Headey.

Pirates
of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
SCI
FI Wire spoke to Terry
Rossio, co-writer of the Pirates of the Caribbean film trilogy,
who said: "The most difficult thing about
writing a trilogy is coming up with the climactic ending of the trilogy.
So for that third film, you have not only the usual challenges of coming
up with an ending, but somehow you have to have the ending of all endings.
The one thing for me that's unique about At Worlds End is that there's
a sense of finality to it. Everybody on set feels it as we're winding down
shooting. This is a giant, epic fantasy trilogy, and it's coming to a close.
There's resolution to the characters. It is that sort of culmination of
the storyline. It's coming to a climax. What couldn't be there in Dead
Man's Chest is present in At Worlds End. And that's kind of interesting."
IMDb's Plot outline for the film reads:
"Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth
Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal,
and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle."
Everyone is really pushing that this is the last one. Are you buying it?
"Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End"
opens Memorial Day weekend.
A
Dog's Breakfast
MGM
has announced that they have picked up worldwide rights to "A
Dog's Breakfast." Not terribly interesting
until you find out that the dark comedy was shot in Vancouver by the cast
and crew of MGM's "Stargate
Atlantis" and "Stargate
SG-1" while on hiatus. It was writtten and directed by David
Hewlett, who plays Dr. McKay on "Atlantis." The story is about
a brother and sister who have always driven each other crazy, but when
the sister returns home with her new TV star fiance, the brother goes over
the edge and tries to break them up. Hewlett and his real-life sister Kate
Hewlett play the siblings, while Paul
McGillion (Dr. Beckett on "Atlantis") plays the fiance. Christopher
Judge (Teal'c on "SG-1"), Rachel
Luttrell (Teyla on "Atlantis") also star. The film, shot in high-definition,
had a budget of less than $1 million. Film clips were recently uploaded
on YouTube and was watched nearly
100,000 times.
Justice
League
Luke
Cage
When
IESB spoke to Jamie
Foxx, he officially took his name off the table to play the lead. He
said: "I don't think [it will happen].
Sometimes you've got windows to do things, and if you do it cool, and if
you don't do it, let it go." I didn't
even know he had been considered. Tyrese
Gibson has been listed for some time now.
Stargate
SG-1
Beau
Bridges was talking to Comingsoon.net
about the status of the upcoming Stargate movies. They quote him as saying:
"They're talking about doing a couple of
movies. I haven't actually signed on the dotted line, but there is talk
about it." Both film scripts, Bridges
said, were thought to be complete.
The
Talisman
TNT
and Steven Spielberg
plan to bring the Stephen
King-Peter Straub
novel "The Talisman"
to the cable channel. The network has given the green light to a six-hour
limited-series adaptation, to premiere in summer 2008, of the novel. "Talisman"
tells the story of a boy on a quest through this world and a parallel world
known as the Territories, with the goal of obtaining a mysterious talisman
to save his dying mother's life. He later finds that the object will also
spare the life of his mother's "twinner," Queen Elizabeth of the Territories.
Ehren Kruger will
write the screenplay.

Next
SCI
FI Wire reports that Nicolas
Cage says fans of Philip
K. Dick will love "Next,"
based on the short story "The Golden Man."
He is quoted as saying: "If you're looking
for the Philip K. Dick mindf--k, you will get it. [It's] based on a Philip
K. Dick short story about a man who has the prescient ability to see two
minutes within his own future. He keeps seeing this girl played by Jessica
Biel, and he doesn't know why he keeps seeing her. He's got to find
out, and when he does, he realizes he can actually see further ahead when
she's there . . . . It's romantic, too. And Jessica Biel is great in it."
Directed by Lee Tamahori
and also starring Julianne
Moore, "Next"
will hit the theatres in September 2007.
Cartoon
Comeback
It
shows my generation when I tell you that I remember not only cartoons as
part of the movie bill, but shorts, newsreels and, yes, serials. Now all
of that has, bit by bit, been drained of all of that extra value. Now,
news comes down that the Walt
Disney Co. under push from Pixar's
John
Lasseter.
The New York Times
quotes Disney producer Don
Hahn as saying: "Shorts have always
been a wellspring of techniques, ideas and young talent. It's exactly what
Walt did, because it's a new studio now, with new talent coming up - -
as it should. I think the shorts program can really grow this studio. You
pay your 10 bucks to see a movie and you get a surprise you hadn't counted
on." New cartoons are scheduled
to play before Disney films. With any luck, other studios will feel compelled
to join in the chase. What's next? With the success of "24"
(which is nothing if not an update of the serial form) we could see serials
back at the show.
Palestine:
Peace Not Apartheid
Jonathan
Demme is in the process of shooting a documentary following president
Jimmy
Carter on a book tour to promote "Palestine:
Peace Not Apartheid." The book forwards
the idea that peace in the Middle East can be attained. Carter is using
the national tour to generate discussion all of which will be captured
on camera.
24
Cast Widens
Rick
Schroder has joined the burgeoning cast for the sixth season of
"24" that
premieres on Fox Sunday, Jan.
14, in a two-hour season premiere, followed by the next two hours on Jan.
15. Schroder will portray Mike Doyle, Jack's go-to man in the field.
Fallen
Bryan
Cranston will play Lucifer in ABC
Family's "Fallen."
The series, based on the series of books by Tom
Sniegoski, tells of an 18-year-old boy (Paul
Wesley) who is half-angel and tries to come to terms with his newly
discovered identity. The series is an extention of the original movie that
premiered July 23.Wesley, Rick
Worthy and Fernanda
Andrade will all reprise their roles. ABC Family is making four
additional hours in Vancouver, which will come to on the cable channel
this summer.

Watchmen
Newsarama
says that Adam Hughes is designing costumes for the film version of Alan
Moore and Dave Gibbons' "Watchmen."
Hughes told the site how he got the job: "I'd
like to say that my work spoke for itself, and my draftsmanship and Dave
Gibbons-lie clean lines just called to them . . . or something .
. . but I really have no idea. Maybe the movie guys walked through a comic
shop looking for somebody - anybody to design their costumes, and some
boobs called out to them from the rack. That's a pun, by the way . . .
But seriously - - I have no idea. Maybe they just liked my stuff.
Zack Snyder is working
on 300 [based on the
graphic novel by Frank Miller],
so obviously he reads the occasional comic or two, one could deduce; but
all in all, they got in touch with us, and it was all very causal."
What will the job be? Hughes answers: "When
you get on the other side of the fence, you sort of understand that there
are certain things that wouldn't survive a direct translation from comic
to screen. Superman and Spider-Man look virtually identical to their comic
book counterparts. Batman doesn't, but yet he still has Batman's silhouette,
and that seems to be enough for most people. But continuing, the X-Men
hardly resemble themselves at all - - but they still work. In doing something
like this, I find that I end up thinking about two completely different
groups within the movie's audience at the same time: the die-hard comic
book fans who will not permit even an iota of alteration; and then you've
got your non-comics readers who will be turned off the minute somebody
walks out in a leotard. You have to come up with something that allures
and entices them and their debit cards and their dollars without being
so radical that it turns off the die-hard fan. It's actually pretty hard
work. In a comic book, because it's all graphic abstraction, it's easier
to accept something that's completely insane. But in a movie, you can make
stuff that's slightly insane - - something that, if you saw someone
walking down the street in it, you'd think, 'No,' but there's something
about the context of a movie that allows the slightly bizarre to become
acceptable, just like where comics allow the amazingly bizarre to become
acceptable. So now it's a matter of, 'Okay, how do we take the Silk Spectre
from the amazingly bizarre to the slightly bizarre?' After all, she wears
an outfit that you could pull right out of Victoria's Secret . . ."
Johnny
5, In Trouble Again
Moviehole.net
reports that a remake of the 1985 film "Short
Circuit" may be coming soon. They said: "'Shirt
Circuit,' John Badham's
1986 sci-fi comedy/adventure, about a wacky experimental government robot
named Johnny 5 who flees the government and ultimately ends up hiding out
with a suburban sweetie (Ally
Sheedy), is about to get a contemporary do-over. There have been rumours
about some kind of continuation of the franchise for a while now, but this
is the first that someone up the food chain has actually acknowledged the
buzz. It's believed some of the original gang - - sans Badham - -
are involved in the remake."
Deadman
Gary
Dauberman is working with director and producer Guillermo del Toro to create
an adaptation of the DC
Comic "Deadman."
The character is the ghost of a murdered circus acrobat who has the power
to possess the different living beings in order to seek out his killer
and help the innocent. Del Toro may direct.
Addam's
Family DVD
If
you are like me and hailed the release, finally, of the Addam's
Family TV Show on DVD recently you have good news coming. TVShowsOnDVD.com
says that the second volume of the series will be coming on March
27th, and contain the last 12 episodes of the first season and the first
9 episodes of the second. That will make the rest of the show fit on volume
3. For the full story go here.
